the red and the black

I may or may not be like most Americans in that I never really heard about "Remembrance Day." I finally figured it out this year, and I was so intrigued. Basically, it's Veterans Day, but it's all based off of a POEM. I love that.

I've heard the poem before---but the connection is amazing.

"In Flanders Fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields." ---John McCrae

Anyways, I REALLY LOVE the little poppy pins. Maybe it's the red and black combo--not sure....so I think I am going to make a poppy crown. I've made on before, but not as stylized. I will hopefully work on it this weekend and can report back with the fabulous results!!

Happy weekend (soon!)

That poem was created by John McCrae who was born and raised in my city. :) Also, poppies USED to have green centers and just a few years back have turned to a black center. (with a lot of discrepancy..)

Also, in the poem, the first line "In Flanders Fields the poppies blow" some say that instead of "blow" it's "grow".. it's been an ongoing curiousity of mine which is actually correct. :)

I'm happy that you have discovered what Rememberance Day is.. and this year I just took note that there is a Veterans Day. :) Is it on November 11th too? (I guess I could just google that, right?!)

It's not exactly BASED on the poem, but people do recite the poem a lot on this day -- especially in schools & ceremonies. And yeah, they used to have green centers.. I remember this ^_^ They've only been black for a few years.

This gives you the main info on Remembrance Day.

My daughter is called Poppy. She loves it when it's Poppy Day. My grandad died on 11th November which is when we celebrate Poppy Day. You know what... I just realised the significance of that... spooky!
